Southern Highlands Hidden Gems

Mount Meru Climb
Tanzania
Summit Mount Meru (4,566 m), Tanzania's second-highest peak, inside Arusha National Park. Walk past giraffes and buffalo with an armed ranger, sleep in mountain huts, and reach a dramatic crater rim at sunrise. A superb climb on its own and the perfect warm-up for Kilimanjaro.
Kilimanjaro Climb – Rongai Route
Tanzania
The only route that climbs Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border. It's drier and quieter than the southern routes, with an extra acclimatisation day at Mawenzi Tarn. A good choice for the rainy months or for anyone who prefers a gentler gradient.
Kilimanjaro Climb – Lemosho Route
Tanzania
Climb Kilimanjaro from the remote western side on what many call the most beautiful route on the mountain. Eight days on the trail give you the best acclimatisation and one of the highest summit success rates. You'll see fewer people, cross the whole Shira Plateau and have plenty of time to enjoy it.

Grumeti Game Reserve
Set along the Serengeti’s Western Corridor, the Grumeti Game Reserve is a private wilderness of rolling plains, riverine forest and acacia woodland. Each year the Great Migration sweeps through, with dramatic crossings at the Grumeti River. With very few guests, game drives here feel exclusive, and activities like walking safaris and night drives reveal a side of the Serengeti most visitors never see. It is a rare blend of abundant wildlife, conservation and quiet luxury.
Maswa Game Reserve
On Serengeti’s southwestern edge, Maswa’s 2,200 km² of grassland and woodland hosts lions, leopards, buffalo and elephants year-round, plus the Great Migration from December to March. It’s a remote, uncrowded wilderness for a quieter safari.
Olduvai Gorge
Known as the “Cradle of Humankind,” Olduvai Gorge sits between Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti. Fossils and tools found here by the Leakeys trace our ancestors back nearly two million years. A short stop at the museum and viewpoint brings this ancient story to life.
Shifting Sand
Near Olduvai Gorge, a crescent of black volcanic ash moves across the plains. Shaped by the winds and born of Ol Doinyo Lengai, the Maasai “Mountain of God,” the dune creeps roughly 15–17 metres a year, and it never stays in one place for long. Its magnetic sands cling together, so even as it travels, it keeps its form.
Olmoti Crater
Just north of Ngorongoro Crater, Olmoti is a peaceful highland caldera reached by a short guided hike from Nainokanoka village. Expect open grasslands, Maasai herders, grazing eland and buffalo, and the striking Munge Waterfall, which feeds the river flowing into Ngorongoro Crater below.
Empakai Crater
Empakai Crater is one of the hidden gems of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It is a dramatic caldera about 6 km wide, with steep, forest-cloaked walls that drop down to a deep emerald soda lake, often fringed pink with flamingos. A hike down to the crater floor rewards you with peaceful, off-the-beaten-path scenery, and on clear days the rim gives sweeping views of the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai and, beyond it, the Great Rift Valley.
Laetoli Footprints
Around 3.66 million years ago, early human ancestors walked across wet volcanic ash at Laetoli, leaving footprints that hardened and survived to today. These tracks were found in 1978 by Mary Leakey’s team and are among the oldest evidence of walking upright. Visiting Laetoli lets you stand in the place where humankind’s journey began.
Engaruka Ruins
At the foot of the Rift Valley escarpment, near Lake Natron, lie the ruins of a farming settlement dating from the 15th to 18th centuries. Its stone terraces and irrigation channels show early African engineering, and why the community abandoned it remains a mystery.
